In this chapter, Paul is telling the Corinthian church that he is sending Titus to them, and is asking them to be generous with him and the person coming with him. He reminds them of the generosity of the Macedonian church who were very poor, yet gave to him generously, as they considered it a privilege to support God’s work.
2 Corinthians 8:12
For if the willingness is present, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.
They should share their abundance while they have it, and the other group will share theirs when they have it. That as long as they do this willingly, doing it based upon what they have is good. There isn’t an external measuring stick. They aren’t expected to give what they don’t have. Basically look in your own wallet, not at what someone else gave.
Dear God, please help us to always be ready and willing to serve you. May our hearts be open to your calling and may we use the resources and abilities you have given us to the best of our ability. Help us to remember that it is not about what we don’t have or being pressured to give beyond our means, but about what we do have and how we can use it for your glory. We pray in Jesus’s name. Amen.
