Give Humbly - 1 Corinthians 13:3

1 Corinthians 13:3
And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

The words used here about feeding the poor describe breaking off pieces and distributing them widely. And I read that early manuscripts, rather than “to be burned” said “to receive glory” or “so that I may boast”.

I read that it was a common practice when the rich gave to the poor, to stand at their gates and hand it out in small portions, rather than giving it all to one person. This would attract a large crowd and a lot of attention, thus glorifying the giver.

Here it is clear that Paul is not condemning giving, but giving ostentatiously to gain praise and glory for oneself, rather than giving because you love God and His people. So let us give cheerfully and lovingly, as well as generously.

Offertory Prayer
Lord, we offer these gifts, not just as a ritual, but as a testament to the love you've given us. May our actions be fueled by your love, not mere obligation, for without love, even the greatest deeds are meaningless. We pray in Jesus’s Name, amen.
